Everday Sign Language -Booklist

These straightforward manuals are intended for adults teaching young children basic vocabulary terms in American Sign Language. Each title addresses a specific theme and introduces nine related words. Double-page spreads feature a simple sentence in oversized font on one page, the highlighted word in all caps accompanied by both written and drawn directions for signing on the facing page, and a full-color photo of the action or item that spans both pages, creating a visual bridge that pulls the two pages together. The written directions usually consist of two or three numbered sentences, and the drawn directions consist of cartoon insets, presumably both intended for instructors or readers older than the preschoolers and kindergarteners pictured on the books? covers. Animals includes both household pets and wild animals. Body Parts contains the sentence, “Abby holds a balloon in her hand.” The photo shows a young girl clearly holding a bright yellow balloon in one hand, along with instructions for signing the word hand. Clothing walks audiences from hats down to shoes. Vehicles states,“The school bus is long and yellow.” The photo depicts a lengthwise shot of a school bus accompanied by directions for fingerspelling b-u-s. Each book maintains a cheerful tone and includes a chart of the ASL alphabet. Recommended for public, school, and classroom libraries.
