Essential Library of Countries - Booklist
These upbeat guides from the Essential Library of Countries series offer snapshots of current conditions in countries around the world. Chapters consider overarching themes, such as history, geography, Indigenous populations, cities, politics, economics, education, medical care, sports, entertainment, flora, and fauna. The first chapter of each title features fictional characters visiting the country for the first time, setting up perfect opportunities to highlight major tourist attractions and national foods. In Cuba, Noah arrives in Havana for a language-immersion program, and he is equally impressed by the vintage cars lining the streets and the ropa vieja his host mom makes for his welcome dinner. New Zealand sees Luke and his parents land in Auckland and head to the botanic gardens to gaze at amazing trees. Nigeria begins in the U.S. as Alex dreams of meeting his new nephew in Nigeria and reminisces about a previous trip there to visit family. In Thailand, Lily and her parents begin their vacation with a visit to one of Bangkok’s floating markets, where Lily samples the infamous durian fruit. Ensuing chapters offer engaging expository text supported by numerous sidebars and colorful photos with satisfying captions. All four books end with copious notes and bibliographies. Despite having different authors, these selections effectively characterize different destinations (including negative and challenging aspects) and create surprisingly thorough profiles.
